According to a recent update from the Vatican, Pope Francis’ health remains stable, although he is still dealing with lung inflammation and respiratory difficulties. The pope’s condition has forced him to postpone his scheduled trip to the United Arab Emirates for the COP28 climate summit in Dubai. He continues to receive antibiotic treatment to combat the infection.

Pope Francis has a history of pulmonary issues, dating back to when he was a young man. In 2013, the Vatican announced that he had undergone surgery to remove a portion of his right lung due to a respiratory illness. At the age of 21, he experienced a severe bout of pneumonia and was near-death for three days. Doctors were unsure of the cause of his symptoms, and it was later discovered that he had three cysts in his lungs. Fortunately, the disease was controlled, and he was able to recover after the surgery.

In March 2023, the pope spent three days at the Policlínica Gemelli in Rome, Italy, receiving treatment for acute pneumonia. More recently, in June 2023, he underwent a three-hour abdominal surgery under general anesthesia. The Vatican reported that the surgery went well without any complications.

To ensure his well-being, Pope Francis now has a personal health assistant, a nurse who monitors his condition closely. He has been using a cane since May of last year due to right knee pain. In 2021, he spent ten days at the Gemelli hospital for a coronary surgery, which he later acknowledged left him with complications, leading him to reject knee surgery.

Aside from his current health issues, the pope has experienced chronic musculoskeletal pain, which has affected his mobility and required him to miss certain official ceremonies. In an interview with Argentine doctor and journalist Nelson Castro, Pope Francis revealed that he sought treatment for coastal pain in Argentina using Chinese acupuncture. Additionally, he has dealt with gallbladder calculi and experienced a mild arterial stenosis in 2004, resulting in a temporary cardiac problem.

Despite his health challenges, Pope Francis remains committed to his role as the leader of the Catholic Church. He continues to fulfill his duties and engage with various audiences, including university students from the Pontifical Catholic University during his visit to Portugal for the XXXVII World Youth Day in August 2023. While he may face physical limitations, his determination to carry out his papal responsibilities remains unwavering.

The Vatican and the global Catholic community continue to send their prayers and support to Pope Francis as he navigates these health challenges. His unwavering faith and resilience serve as an inspiration to many, demonstrating the power of faith and perseverance in times of adversity.
