The Largest Titanosaur Tooth Ever Discovered in Brazil
Scientists from Brazil’s Federal Triangular University (UFTM) have recently made an astonishing discovery, confirming that the titanosaur tooth unearthed in Uberaba, Minas Gerais, a decade ago, is the largest of its kind ever recorded. This exciting finding has just been published after years of meticulous research and analysis by the team.
The enormous fossil was initially found during excavation efforts in the Serra da Galga region; however, it has taken a decade for the scientists to fully document and publish their findings on this remarkable tooth. The tooth’s dimensions are truly awe-inspiring. When taking into account the stem’s corm, the tooth measures approximately 8 centimeters in height. Its shape is reminiscent of a notebook, with one side appearing slightly uneven. The crowning glory of this discovery is the tooth’s coroa, which measures an impressive 6.2 centimeters in diameter, solidifying its claim as the largest known titanosaur tooth.

To shed more light on this groundbreaking discovery, Thiago Marinho, a renowned paleontologist from UFTM, was interviewed by G1. His expertise and insights have provided invaluable information about the tooth’s significance. Marinho confirmed that the tooth was found in close proximity to the remains of the Uberabatitan ribeiroi, the largest dinosaur species ever discovered in Brazil. This colossal creature measured a staggering 27 meters in length. Although it is impossible to definitively confirm whether the tooth belongs to the Uberabatitan ribeiroi, Marinho suggests that it is highly likely due to its size and features resembling those of other giant titanosaurs.
The precious titanosaur tooth has found a permanent home in the collection of UFTM’s esteemed “Llewellyn Ivor Price” Paleontology Research Center. This research center is known for housing some of the most prestigious paleontological artifacts in Latin America, attracting scholars from all corners of the globe. The addition of this colossal tooth further enhances the center’s reputation and contributes to our understanding of these ancient giants.

Uberaba itself is a well-established hub for paleontological research in Brazil, and the discovery adds another feather to its cap. The nearby Dinosaur Museum is a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from far and wide who are captivated by the region’s rich prehistoric heritage. In addition to its local significance, the city of Uberaba eagerly anticipates receiving the title of “Global Geopark.” This coveted accolade is bestowed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and recognizes areas with exceptional geological and paleontological importance. The outcome of the city’s bid will be revealed in the coming months, potentially solidifying its status as a global paleontological treasure.
The discovery of the largest titanosaur tooth in Brazil highlights the ongoing importance of paleontological research in uncovering the secrets of our ancient past. With each extraordinary find, we gain further insight into the magnificent world of these gigantic creatures that once roamed our planet. Thanks to the dedication and expertise of scientists like those from UFTM, we continue to unravel the mysteries of these awe-inspiring giants, inch by colossal inch.
